A photographer and artist based in Paris and Osaka. Rather than the Japanese word “shashin” , which means “capturing truth,” I am drawn to the Greek-origin word “photography,” meaning “writing with light.” My aim is not simply to photograph subjects, but to “create” new worlds using light.
Background

Born in Tokyo, currently residing in Paris. After studying psychology at the University of Tokyo’s Faculty of Education and working at Sony, I moved to France. I studied film studies and visual anthropology at the University of Paris, earning a doctorate in Cinema and Theatre Studies under the guidance of Jean Rouch, former director of Cinémathèque Française. Subsequently, I worked in various audiovisual fields including television and video production.
Transition to Photography
I began photography in 1980, receiving guidance from the late Yukichi Watanabe, Vice President of the Japan Professional Photographers Society. For approximately 10 years, I introduced European photography trends through “Asahi Camera” magazine and engaged with numerous photographers including Jun Shiraoka. Through this process, my exploration of international photographic expression began.
Fusion with Contemporary Art
I developed relationships with Japanese contemporary artists such as Yasuichi Tabuchi (COBRA), Takami Sakurai (Kyushu-ha), and Takesada Matsutani (Gutai). Through participation in Réalités Nouvelles, a group specializing in abstract art, I continued pursuing abstract photography. My close relationships with French geometric artists within this group led to the establishment of geometric photography (abstract photography), and I frequently exhibited in geometric art group shows.
Evolution of Work Series
Petrification Series (c. 1985~): Wrapping backgrounds and objects with aluminum foil and photographing them under lighting. Printing these darkly creates a unique texture (silver halide photography using black and white film). My exploration of materials and photography begins here.

One Second Études (2004~): A series capturing the trajectories of moving subjects or camera movement itself through long exposures set at one-second shutter speeds.

Interference Fringe Series (2004~): Photographing virtual color stripe patterns (interference fringes) created when light interferes on oil films, glass, or film surfaces.
Transparent Sheet Series (2006~): Plastic wrap is a soft material that transmits and reflects light, but becomes linear when stretched. I successfully captured linear light patterns using transparent sheets, utilizing this property to create works with linear patterns.
Paper Works Series (2015~): Pursuing expressions of light, shadow, and color by illuminating geometric models made from origami or cut paper with colored lighting. While typically using white paper, hard transparent sheets are sometimes employed. This series established abstract photography through geometric composition.
Division Series (2023~): Works that divide the frame and combine multiple elements to construct new images. Division methods vary, including using contours from my own photographs of stone walls, paving stones, and wood grain, utilizing geometric figures, and programmatic screen division.
Other Activities
I also engage in jazz live photography (Chet Baker, Archie Shepp, Elvin Jones, etc.) and French Romanesque art photography. In recent years, I have been working on generative art through programming and have organized several digital art group exhibitions.
